Your Jeep's key fob battery is something you never think about until it stops working. Although we take it for granted that our car doors will unlock when we push a button, it's important to know what to do when they don't. This guide will help you to notice when your key fob battery is failing and give you step-by-step instructions for changing it. Although some elements may differ depending on your Jeep's year and model, the steps are much the same for all models.

How Do You Know It's Time To Change Your Jeep's Key Fob Battery?

While most of your Jeep's electrical components get power from the vehicle's battery, your key fob is an exception. This means that the battery has to be replaced occasionally, as the average life span of a key fob battery is around three to five years. However, your key fob battery will show some signs that it's nearly depleted before failing completely. Two common signs indicate you may need a new battery:

  • Your range isn't what it used to be: Your Jeep's key fob will work well even 50 feet away from the vehicle. If this range decreases, you can assume that you should replace your key fob battery as soon as possible.
  • You need to press the key fob's button down more than once to lock or unlock your Jeep's doors: You may think you pressed it wrong when it happens the first time. However, if it happens every time, you can conclude the key fob battery is failing.

What Do I Need To Replace My Jeep's Key Fob Battery?

First, you need a new battery. Most Jeep models use one CR2032 battery, but some older models may use a CR2025. The CR2032 is fairly common, and you'll probably have no trouble finding one at a local convenience store or online. It's shaped like a coin and is used for a wide range of small electrical devices, such as watches and toys. You may discover one is already powering another of your devices, which can be handy if you need an immediate replacement and can't get to the store.

You'll also need a flathead screwdriver. Some older models also have a screw that keeps the key fob cover in place. If yours has one, you'll also need a screwdriver to unscrew it.

How To Change Your Jeep's Key Fob Battery

Now that you have everything you need, it's time to get to work. First, make sure your Jeep is turned off, and find a flat working surface. The following steps clearly describe the replacement procedure.

Locate Your Key Fob's Seam

Your Jeep key fob has a seam around its edge where the top and bottom pieces of plastic meet. Position the key fob with the buttons facing upward while you locate this seam. Some newer models have a spot where the screwdriver is meant to be inserted. As mentioned earlier, some older models may also have an extra screw that you need to remove.

Use the Screwdriver To Open the Key Fob

Use the flathead screwdriver to gently get in the seam between the two plastic pieces and pry them apart. If the seam doesn't have a designated location for the screwdriver, choose a location close to the keyring mount, making it easier to separate the two pieces. Pry them apart as gently as possible to avoid damaging the key fob.

Take the Key Fob Apart and Replace Its Battery

Now that the two pieces are separated, you should be able to see the battery's location. Note the old battery's orientation, then remove it and put the new one in its place. Use the flathead screwdriver if you can't remove the old one with your fingers. Remember to place the new battery with the positive sign facing upward. If you're unsure which side is which, remember how the old battery was placed and insert the new one the same way.

Put the Key Fob Back Together

Now that your new battery is in, it's time to finish the job. Fit the key fob's top and bottom together and gently press them until they click into place. Make sure they're positioned correctly beforehand to avoid any seal damage. Also, look for gaps; the fob should be sealed on all sides. If a screw was removed, now is the time to reinstall it.

Reprogram Your Key Fob and Test It

Some Jeep models require reprogramming after replacing the key fob battery. It's easy to do and will only take a minute or so. Get in your Jeep, close all its doors, and put the key in the ignition without starting the vehicle. Then, open the door on the driver's side and press the lock button. Finally, turn the ignition on and hold the key in that position for five seconds. That should do it. You can now try out your new key fob battery. If it still doesn't work, check if you placed the battery correctly.
